Concept Illustration

I have finally finished up my presentation for my concept illustration class! It have thoroughly enjoyed the class and am excited to keepworking on my story.

The story I created, called Alouette, is centered around a 5-year-old girl who is trying to overcome the grief at the loss of her parents. I decided to pitch the story to the class as an idea for a traditionally animated feature film.

In conjunction with my internship archiving the Don Bluth collection at the SCAD library special collections, I decided to try my ha

nd at creating my own version of an animation cel for my story.

Cels are basically finished paintings on acetate that are shot for hand-drawn animation. The image is inked to the front of acetate and painted, usually with acrylic, on the back. The painting part is a little bit of a process because everything is done backwards - details are executed first and so on. I did my cel in 5 layers - one layer for each character and then a layer for the deck.

I also attempted a traditional matte painted background, using gouache. It was definitely a challenge because I am not used to working so realistic.

However, it was a great experience, experi

menting with this new technique and hopefully I will be able to apply it to future projects.

Gilgamesh!

It's been a while since anyone has posted anything here... shame on us. This isn't technically an illustration, but this is my maquette for my conceptual illustration class. If you don't know anything about this guy, look up the Gilgamesh Epic. It's the oldest epic poem, about a Sumerian warrior-king. I learned so much about anatomy when sculpting this. I highly recommend it.

Materials: pine board, 1/8" aluminum armature wire, narrow-gauge steel wire, plumbers' 2-part epoxy, Super Sculpey, old boxer-briefs, Elmer's glue, acrylic paint, basswood, black thread, and gold leaf (for the sword).

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Adobe Student Licensing

Yesterday I received my very own CS5 design suite installation CD in the mail. And I bought the entire package for $200. Wooooooo! I'm sure it's online somewhere for free, but this is the cheapest I could find it legally. And, maybe I'm a little slow, but it was difficult for me to find it that cheap, so I'd like to share the links with you.

You can find the prices for program packages here. At the top of the page you can enter in the state and country your school is located in, and find if you're eligible for student licensing. Here is the Georgia page. For SCAD kids, you'll see that we have to buy our software through the school. You'll find the link to JourneyEd.com under the Resources tab of MySCAD, but the direct link to the Adobe Student Licensing is here.

If you just search Adobe in the Journey website, it shows CS5 as being $300, and if you call or email Journey, they'll say that they don't work with SCAD and they only sell Adobe for $300. Well HA Journey! The world will now buy it for $200. Or, you know, find it online for free.

Some of you may find this a little hard to bear, but the Grad studio is being cleaned out. There was no notice (that I know of), but last Thursday night all items in the room considered to be trash were thrown out. This included all of the notes and sketches pinned to the boards. Certain items were left behind and are currently piled up on the center tables to be collected, but anything left behind will also be trashed this coming Thursday.

I had to print 6 yards (3 and 3) of fabric with a repeat pattern. I had posted the pattern file sometime last week. Here are two awful pictures of the fabric. I haven't had a chance to photograph it with good light and a regular camera rather than bad light and a phone camera. Some of you may have seen this on facebook. But not the last pic!

We all know that we are talented illustrators with bright futures in the industry ahead of ourselves. I don't know about you, but I often wonder what those who walked this road before us have accomplished, so I went to the SCAD Alumni website and found a great list of accomplishments of our predecessors (both MFA and BFA). And, the accomplishments posted are only those submitted this month to the alumni newsletter, so obviously there are many many more success stories out there. If you have one, or know of someone who has been published, or is being published, please share and highlight your or their success! I want to know more about SCAD Illustration success stories.

Here are some highlights from the SCAD Alumni website:

Sam Spratt (B.F.A., illustration, 2010) published a medical illustration of a nanoparticle, the first of its kind, for the American Association for Cancer Research, regarded as one of the top cancer research journals in the world. The illustration was used on tour around the nation exhibiting a brand new breakthrough in cancer treatment. Pratt is a also semi-finalist in the Adobe Design Achievement Awards competition, illustration category. His is one of 29 illustrations selected out of more than 4,000 submissions. He is a runner-up for Creative Quarterly 20 and was accepted to American Illustration 29.

Of 24 finalists in the Teatrio Cultural Association of Venice's 16th International Competition of Illustration selected from around the world, six were from SCAD: Kelsey Garrity (B.F.A., illustration, 2010), Drew Botts (B.F.A., illustration, 2009), Alex Collins (B.F.A., illustration, 2010), Meg McClelland, graduate graphic design student, Solongo Mellecker, graduate illustration student, and Leslie A. Wood (B.F.A., illustration, 2010).

Kelsey Garrity (B.F.A., illustration, 2010) won third place in the Teatrio Cultural Association of Venice's 16th International Competition of Illustration. Her prize is either €400 or publication of her book. A catalog will be printed with the finalists' works and an exhibition is scheduled to preview in Chioggia, Italy, before embarking on a world tour.

Marie-Elena Joseph (B.F.A., illustration, 2010) accepted an internship with Nickelodeon creative studios in New York City.

Rod Ben (graduate illustration student), Katie Stockton (B.F.A., illustration, 2009) and Dan Murdoch(undergraduate animation student), helped create "Archer," FX's successful new animated series.

New Favorite Thing Ever

So, it's not like no one's ever heard of this before, but we have FREE lynda.com access... FREE! (Note: no, of course, it's not really free, but might as well use it) I always knew this, but was busy with classes and work and didn't really have time to sit down and watch the demos (and still don't, really, as I should be working on my thesis, but my brain was missing school and needed itself some learnin'). I'm watching the InDesign CS5 demo and it is *really* fantastic... I'm learning a lot, especially in the shortcuts and efficiency world (and, fortunately, there's a lot of keyboard shortcuts that go across all Adobe CS5 programs, so I'm getting more efficient at Photoshop and Illustrator to boot!).

Again, this is not new news to anyone, but I think of how everyone in Professional Practices last quarter was completely lost on what to do about building a website, and kept saying they needed to learn how, and people take entire classes on Illustrator, when this stuff is all FOR FREE ON-LINE. There are demos on HTML and Dreamweaver, all the Adobe programs, stuff I'd never use (social networking?? Twitter demos?). Conveniently enough, it has all the older versions of programs, so I can learn how to use my old version of Dreamweaver 8. You can download exercise files and follow along with the demos to build up that muscle and interactive memory, so you'll really get the stuff down.

Just sayin', if you haven't checked it out yet, check it out and DIY summer class. Good times.

In ScreenPrinting (in the fibers dept) we have to create a repeat pattern and print 3 yards of fabric. This is my pattern so far. I need to make some changes so I dont have a ton of colors to print, but I'm liking the way this looks so i might just keep it as a pattern for a separate project to finish later with other coordinating designs.

Summer Project

The Saint

I know it's sometimes difficult for people to do work over the summer, but as professional artists, we have to do work outside of school (especially those of us who are finished with school).
So I am proposing a summer project - consider it your summer reading.

Problem: Using whichever technique you want, create an icon of a saint. You can use a real saint, like Saint Julian the Hospitaller, the patron saint of jugglers, or Saint Christopher, who was said to have a dog's head instead of a man's. You could make someone who you think should be a saint into one, or use the iconography to point out that someone isn't all that saintly (see Anita Kunz's work) Do some research.

You may work either in black and white or in color and in any medium.

Objectives: Through this project, students will do some work for once.

Materials: Whatever you want.

Barron Storey

I know some of you got to meet Barron Storey, or at least hear him speak at the Society of Illustrators last summer. I first heard of him through the Illustration Academy when he visited for a week in 2008.

When he came to the Academy, he brought with him a stack of sketchbooks - journals to him - that he had completed over the years. He is one of the most prolific artists I have ever encountered and inspired me to work in sketchbooks as much as I do.

To him, sketchbooks are journals where he can draw out thoughts and reactions to the world around him.

His stories are wild and amazing, and if you get the chance to see him, I'm sure you'll hear one or two.

I Found This Inspiring

Last week in my Design Methodologies class, Professor Montero gave a great lecture on photographer Dan Eldon. Dan was the youngest Reuters photojournalist in history and traveled the world working for various publications including Newsweek. At the young age of 23 he was stoned to death by an angry mod in Somalia while he was there for work.

While the story of his life, and particularly his untimely death, is quite poignant, his extensive journals are particularly inspiring. His journals are a combination of collage, painting, drawing, and photography and they often read like complete images that are graphically based. Like many Illustrators, he was obsessive about his sketchbooks and was constantly creating. He would make photocopies of his photos, and copy a copy, then copy that copy, and so on until he had very grainy, toner ridden images. He would paste them in his journals and often scratch them out, and either paint or draw over them.

After his death, his mother recovered dozens of said journals and subsequently had them published. Above are some examples from his journals. If you are into poster design, take a look because I feel like his images and techniques could work well for that media. The images give wonderful insight into his creative mindset, and I feel like his story as well as his works are great inspiration to any artist.

One of my undergrad professors from EUP has basically switched over from painting in oils to painting on a tiny screen.

Anyway, I know a lot of y'all are iPhone users like myself, and a friend of mine recently forwarded me the following link: http://www.getuncommon.com/

It's a website that creates one of a kind iPhone covers. People can upload photos and have them plastered on their trusty mobile device. But, more importantly, it has turned into a great platform for artists, especially illustrators, to upload their art to the site so that people can choose from a community of pieces. So, moral of the story is, your illustrations could be on an iPhone near you! The site lets you upload your info, so it is great exposure.

The above image is an example of a drawing I did of Fenway Park that has been used as decor on an iPhone case. Super Cool!

Hey,
Have any of you ever used Flash to make a website? I've done it before and am just updated it. I had a preloader in my previous site layout (the little percentage count of the download) but for some reason that file isnt working so i can't just copy and paste the code cause I don't really know what the old code is referring to...make sense? Anyway, my question is, do any of you know how to make a separatee preloader in Flash that calls the main index.SWF file rather than making the preloader within the same index.swf file?

I don't really know how to explain it if this is confusing...call me?

A Ballad of the Graduated

The future looked bright for the Savannah 12 that day;
Although those school bills would be hell to pay.
Graduation came and went without any shame,
Off to join a world to garner their respective fame.
A straggling few left immediately. The rest
Clung to the friends that had been there through the best.
Together they shared tales of yesterday that - -
I’m going to share with you in one big chat.

We can start with the last year for time’s sake.
Because two years of stories is a lot to take.
Bright-eyed and hopeful the Newbies entered SCAD.
Welcomed and accepted by those who were grad.
These cats were fun and exciting, to the wonderment of all,
And delightfully, there were some who were tall.
After initial meet and greets, something awesome occurred,
The newbies were like family, after day the third.

There was Jefe the boss, with his fedora and vest;
And then there’s Bri, with that smile that’s better than the rest.
Huggy and affectionate was Lauren Brown,
with her sidekick Lady, who never had a frown.
That tall red head, that’s Cindy Lou.
She’s okay, even though she always had the flu.
Two Jonathans - one Beard and one Whitespot.
And then there was Jana LaChance, we didn’t see her a lot.

Although quiet, Blythe was so sweet.
I found a fellow storyteller in Krishna, which was neat.
Angela and Mike were fun to be around,
Around Erin Burns, I seemed to always be a clown.
Time restricts me from naming the rest of them all,
that incoming class was anything but small.
School was school, so there’s no need to talk about it.
A recap of our fun times, now. If you would permit

Trevor got pissed on, the night we went to the beach.
Beware of the jellyfish, he will now teach.
There were parties o plenty - Swanky Pants, Mustache, and Sexy.
Interestingly enough, two of those were for me.
We ate out and played pool while having a brew,
saw some movies, and even a round of karaoke or two.
Mark and Ricardo did Livin’ la Vida Loca by Ricky Martin,
while Egypt’s Billie Jean took home the win.

To people’s delight, Dana would bake many a treat,
Everyone but me, because those I could not eat.
Catherine would paint pretty veggies, while Candice would work with ink.
Everyone was so talented, come to think.
Beth could control a room like no one else could.
The illustration Grad Room, that was Beth’s hood.
Robert had one dance, that for some reason he would keep showing us.
He seemed so happy, so no one wanted to fuss.

My stories seem to be running a little long,
It’s hard to pick the bad ones from the ones that really belong.
But I digress, it’s time to put this tale to an end.
Before I add stuff I did not intend.

I particularly don’t like goodbyes, they are just too sad.
But to think I might never see you cats again, makes me mad.
It’s been a hell of a journey, one I will never forget.
Had I not come to SCAD, to think, we would have never met.
I wish you all fortunes beyond your greatest desires.
It’s gonna be hard work, but that’s what life requires.
I”m not going to say goodbye, because those really suck,
I’m going to say - Until Tomorrow, and wish you all the best of Luck.

While I was checking out the Bad Crit blog today I came across an interview with Danielle Buerli. There were a few pictures up of her work and I realized she does 3D work! I was really excited and went to her website. She has some pretty neat things that she knit-sculpted. Her backgrounds seem to be watercolors drawings that were cut into shapes.

I found in undergrad that the best models to draw are often those that are sleeping. For the most part, they stay still for you and you don't have to pay them-or pay for a life drawing class. Though I love the quick, gestural sketches I make from people in class, in the park, in bars, etc., I can get more detailed with the sleeping poses if I want.

Liquid Courage!

This is a series of promotional coasters I designed and illustrated. Originally I just wanted to do helmets, because I'm a history nerd, but Bri suggested the theme "Liquid Courage" (which I now think is the best idea I've ever had). So I related the helmets to a popular alcoholic beverage from each respective culture. The helmets are painted in watercolor, the text was done in InDesign, and I mocked them up in Photoshop.

On an unrelated note, does anyone know why Blogger is inconsistently making our images unclickable? I don't know HTML well enough to figure out why it would be doing this...

Tricky Techniques

Ever since I was little, I have always used the most inexpensive materials to illustrate with - such as crayola colored pencils and crayons. As I progressed into undergrad, I began using more sophisticated mediums such as oils and acrylics, however I continued to use the student grade varieties. Now as a grad student, I have found that when it comes to art supplies cost does, more or less, equate to better quality. Unfortunately, that is not good news to my wallet.

Last quarter I discovered the miracle that is gouache. I love the way it looks, however, because of it's chalky quality, it's a bit difficult to manage. Also, it is ridiculously expensive and seems to dry out at an incredible rate. Yet, the colors are beautifully rich and need little to no enhancement when scanned. Here was the result of my first time using gouache...

This quarter I am taking a watercolor class and as much as I am learning about the medium, watercolor does not get any easier to handle. It is truly fickle. Wet on wet, wet on dry. Watercolor has a mind of its own. Our latest project was to create a theater poster and I chose the Greek play, Lysistrata. Taking place during the Pelponnesian war, the play is about how the title character urges the women of Greece to withhold sex from their husbands in order to end the war. Inspired by ancient Greek pottery, this is what I came up with...

As much as I loved painting in oil, I can't seem to break my current addiction to Photoshop. Until lately, I've always disliked the way that my digital work turns out. This piece felt like a bit of a turning point for me. It's an illustration for "What's Up?", a small-circulation magazine in Annapolis, Maryland. The brief was 'one Russian sailor fighting with several American sailors in an Annapolis bar in the 1860s.' I probably spent more time on costume research than on the actual painting. And it's still probably wrong...

Anyway, after doing most of the work in Photoshop, I imported it to Painter X and started slapping some oily brush strokes into the background and other flat-looking areas. I really like the result. I think it's appropriate how it bears some resemblances to an old colorized photo, too.

Bedtime Story

Well, I said I would post this when it was done so,

This model measures 8 inches tall, and all of the books- except for the larger one that serves as a base- were built. And the floor is made of illustration board planks (less than 1" wide), gesso, and paint. There was a little confusion that it was actually a floor, so that's definitely something to think about for future 3D projects. I think I'm most pleased with the hair, which I made with kid's craft feathers- ha! The drawing and "effects" were done afterwards in Photoshop. Special thanks to the photographer team!

It's fun to compare it to the maquette below. Things were so much simpler way back then...

Hey comrades!

A couple great opportunities to do some socially-conscious posters. The first is from the Center for the Study of Political Graphics for their "Out of the Closet and Into the Street" exhibition on LGBT rights. Here's the link - the deadline is June 1. If you're looking for inspiration, CSPG's site has some incredible posters from past (and present) struggles for social, political, and economic justice.

There's also Good50x70, which some of us have been working on for class. Each year the organization picks several non-profit organizations (Amnesty International, the World Wildlife Federation, Greenpeace, etc.) and solicits posters from graphic designers and illustrators for campaigns.

Yaaaah! Let's go chain ourselves to something and chant loudly! Also, are these hyperlinks working? I've had to re-edit this post about five times.

You know you're in Savannah when...

Quick poll: What's everyone's favorite uniquely "Savannah" moment? Perhaps a brush with Paula Deen, a pollen assault, a traffic jam caused by a horse-drawn carriage, a hit-and-run tour-giving hearse?

My favorite moment came today when biking through Forsyth Park. Anachronistic sight one: Cannons. Anachronistic sight two: A bunch of white people surrounded by giant Confederate flags. Intrigued by the cannons, and judging from the lack of hoods and counter-protesters that this (thankfully) wasn't a fledgling Klan rally, I stopped by.

I entered the Forsyth cafe for a reconnaissance information-gathering mission/chai latte. My barista informed me that today was, in fact, Confederate Memorial Day. I ventured outside and almost dumped tea on myself when a cannon fired. A small child began screaming in terror. Actually, the kid was at least eleven, so he really had no excuse to be afraid of loud noises. (Being afraid of spilling scalding tea on yourself, however, is a legitimate fear at any age.)

An older black gentleman was sitting on a bench next to me. He was talking to his friend about the re-enactors, and laughing, said, "That ain't us, there." Well said, sir.

More 3D illustration!

I too love 3D illustration and want to do more of it. This post is a follow up of Jeff's post.

In Techniques 1 in the fall Ed assigned a 3D project that required us to just make the model with the intent of eventually photographing it. The theme was musicians. I made John Lennon.

John measures 16 inches and his Rickenbacker is 6 inches.

He was a ton of fun to make but took rather long. I think part of that was because I was unsure of whether or not I would paint his clothes on or clothe him in felt. I ended up doing the latter. But because it wasn't till towards the end of making him that I made the decision, I spent a lot of time working the paperclay to get the anatomy as correct as possible.

In Techniques 2, all the students had to write their own assignments. We emailed these assignments to each other and picked one to do for our final project. I picked Jeff's, which was to make models, light and photograph them, then turn in the final print out. Keeping with the Beatles theme, Ringo was built. This time making the figure was a lot faster since I didn't have to spend ages perfecting his anatomy in clay. However, the drums took some time, but it was worth it in the end (even though it needed supports to hold up the tomtom on the basedrum cause I manhandled it too much!).

The most recent 3D project was made for Drawing for Illustrators. Again it's music related but this time it's not a Beatle. I created a record cover for the album Funky Music Machine by Maceo and All The King's Men. Maceo Parker is a saxophone player who used to play a lot for James Brown.

I still need to edit some part of the image and perhaps tweek the type coming out of the sax. But for now it will do.

Thought I'd post on here...a revival! Check out this new illustration I just did for my friend's documentary AMERICAN BEAR. The film is a documentary that her and her boyfriend will begin shooting this summer.

Here is the description:

Sarah and Greg are setting out on an adventure exploring American trust and fear through hospitality. Armed with their charm, courage, and a camera, they will rely on the kindness of strangers for a home each night, and if they're lucky, a few meals along the way.

Following up to Jeff's post about the magic of 3-D illustration...

Last quarter, those of us in Techniques caught a glimpse of the fall quarter class' 3-D illustrations, and they are quite awesome.

Also: What are everyone's thoughts on calling professors by their first or last names? Gracious me, I don't want to be disrespectful; after all, Savannah is basically trapped in the nineteeth century. But it seems oddly formal that we say "Professor Blabbity-Blah." Maybe this is just because, at the Kumbyaa-singing Quaker institution I attended for undergrad, we trick-or-treated at the president's house and watched Gandhi while our professor cooked us vegetarian food. Don't judge my hippie ways.

3D Illustration

In my mind, this past week has been all about 3d Illustrations.

Before I came to grad school I was a set designer and among the many different parts of that job was building models of the sets, and making little figures to fill the space. For example, here's a photo of the model for 'The Addam's Family", the last big musical I did before leaving New York. Don't read the NY Times review... trust me it will be bigger than that crap show about a green lady. (blogger's note: I haven't actually seen the show yet, what with living in Georgia now) And here's a close-up of the figures from 'Les Liaisons Dangerouses'. As an assistant, I would get 'in trouble' for spending too much time making clothes and hair for

1.5" tall people, but it is SO worth it.

I have a definite interest in reworking these skills for illustration. There isn't a class on the subject here at SCAD, but we are lucky enough to have professors Megan Berkheiser and Ed Briant- who do amazing, amazing things with paper and clay- around to ask questions. Obviously there's a big difference between a theater model and a finished 3d illustration for print, so I have a lot to learn. I've done two projects in 3d and just started a third on Tuesday about the joy of reading.

As luck would have it, Chris Sickels from Red Nose Studio was in Savannah for an (awesome) lecture. **there should be a dozen posts on this lecture** I sat in on his classroom visit and it was truly great to learn about his process- seeing his sketches turned into puppets, seeing the lighting set ups, miniature props, and then final photos- and to learn about his career trajectory. What an inspiring artist! He also offered some helpful input on my current piece. Pretty lucky...

So here is my *rough* maquette (they will be reading a bedtime story), and assuming all goes as planned I'll post the final next week!

Mayor says time to ride herd on art
Paintings on public wall raise stir

EUREKA SPRINGS — The Eureka Springs City Council is drafting a contract to take control
of an outdoor art exhibit that some people find offensive.
The Artery exhibit, which has been on display since September, contains 26 paintings that
range from the Virgin Mary to one of the Drag Queen of Hearts tempting Alice in
Wonderland. The exhibit’s theme is idols.
Mayor Dani Joy said she has had several telephone calls from tourists complaining about
The Artery, which covers a 150-footlong retaining wall along First Street.
“People would call in and say, ‘How could you as a city let that happen?’” said Joy.
The two paintings mentioned above are among the most contentious at The Artery.The
painting titled The Divine Mother by Michelle Levy of Eureka Springs has been criticized
because it depicts the Virgin Mary breast-feeding the baby Jesus. Above her head are the
words “Does this halo make my face look fat?”
The Temptation of Alice, a painting by Beth Post of Fayetteville, shows Alice in
Wonderland standing next to a scantily clad man in women’s clothing. The paintings can be seen on The Artery’s Web site at www.thearterysite.com.
“To me, it’s just obscene,” Margaret Miller, 50, of Owensville, Ind., said of The Temptation of
Alice. “I would not want my children here with me or my grandchildren.”
Miller and her husband, Dave Miller, 51, parked their motorcycle in a space in frontof The
Artery on Thursday morning after riding down from Indiana.
“I don’t think it should be public art,” said Dave Miller. “You pull in here with a carload of kids, and boom! There it is, right in front of you.”
In her artist’s statement on The Artery’s Web site, Post states that her painting was inspired
by the Bible story of Christ being tempted by Satan in the desert.
The exhibit is to come down by September, but one artist took a painting down early to put it
in another show, and other artists may do the same. Normally, The Artery has 26 paintings
on display. Each one is 4-by-8 feet. Previously The Artery exhibits were up for one year.
The city owns the wall. Charlotte Buchanan, who founded The Artery in 2005, thought she
was doing the city a favor by providing art where there was once only cracked concrete.
Until the current exhibit, there had been no complaints, said Joy, who has been mayor for
the past three years.
“The previous sets she had up were good,” Joy said.
After speaking with a lawyer for the Arkansas Municipal League, Joy said she decided that a
contract is in order between the city and Buchanan. That means the city is taking possession
of The Artery, but for now at least, Buchanan still manages it.
The contract is still being drafted by the City Council. Joy notified Buchanan about the
contract in a Feb. 26 letter, adding that the City Council would consider proposals from other
people who want to manage The Artery.
Buchanan said she doesn’t believe that the city can take the project away from her and give
it to another person to run. She and her husband have registered The Artery Foundation as
a nonprofit organization.
“They don’t realize what they’re trying to do,” she said. “It’s trademarked and a foundation.”
Joy said she plans to establish a Eureka Springs Arts Council, which will decide what
paintings can be displayed on the wall. She has decided on eight members for the Arts
Council, but there may be as many as 11. The wall fronts a parking lot, butthe paintings are
visible from Main Street, which has a considerable amount of foot traffic.
“We were inspired,” said Denise White, 46, of Peculiar, Mo., who was walking by The Artery
with her daughter Jenna White, 20. “We were up a couple of days ago. It seems unique that
someone came up with this idea. My son would love this, whatever it is with the horns.”
Denise White was pointing at a painting described on The Artery’s Web site as Elpha’s Levis
Baphomet, by J.D. Davis of Eureka Springs. It appears to be a copy of Eliphas Levi’s 1854
drawing of Baphomet, an occult idol. Some people have complained that the humanoid
goatlike creature in the painting is demonic.
“I hope they don’t take them down because they are very cool,” Denise White said. “We are
back today to take pictures.”
“If I wanted to remember Eureka Springs, I would take my picture here,” Jenna White said.
She posed in front of several of the paintings while her mother took photos of her.
Denise White said that taking them down “would be disappointing.”
Buchanan, a former Eureka Springs City Council member, had the council’s blessing when
she started The Artery four years ago. She has three gallery owners who serve as her
selection committee. They decide which artists will be allowed to display paintings.
Buchanan said the artists were selected, then had several months to paint what they wanted
to be displayed on the wall. The exhibit was “curated,” not “juried,” she said. The Arts
Council will serve as a jury for the proposed art under the mayor’s plan.
“Anyplace you go, in any city,art is always juried before it goes up,” Joy said.
“Are we a gated community or are we a place where people come and be inspired by us?”
asked Buchanan.
“Charlotte did the city a big service by taking an area that was blighted and turning it into an
outdoor art museum,” said Karen Lindblad, a bookshop owner and another former Eureka
Springs City Council member.
“Tourists come in all the time and say this is incredible,” said Lindblad. “It reflects the artists
who are in town because we are an artist’s city. ... To me, if you put censorship on art, you’re
running the risk of not hanging the best art.”
But the mayor said, “It’s not censorship as much as stewardship.” She said, “Unfortunately,
there has to be responsibility.It’s not a matter of trying to hurt anybody or not be about art
because Eureka Springs is about art. ... If she had done this on private property, it wouldn’t
be a problem. But she did it on public property.”
John Rankine, a local artist, said: “If the city takes this away from Charlotte, there are a lot of
artists who won’t participate, including myself,”
About 25 paintings have sold since The Artery went up in 2005. Sixty percent of the
proceeds go to the artist, and the remainder goes to The Artery Artist’s Trust.
“We want Charlotte to keep this,” said Carol Peacock, an artist who sold a painting through
The Artery. Peacock said she doesn’t mind giving 40 percent of the selling price to The
Artery Foundation, but that money would go to the city under the mayor’s new plan.
“I really don’t think I would want to give 40 percent of my money to them,” Peacock said.
“Typically, when the city takes something over, it stops happening. A lot of people don’t
understand art. It’s often controversial and always has been.”
But the mayor said the contentious art is best left to private galleries. The Artery is on a
public wall.
“People happen onto it without meaning or choosing to,” she said of The Artery.
If a person walks into an art gallery, “you’re consciously making that decision,” she said.
One of the paintings has been peeling badly from the elements because it apparently wasn’t
sealed.
Since The Artery began fouryears ago, only one painting has been vandalized. It was a
painting of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., called It Takes a Village, by Elizabeth Wolf
of Eureka Springs.
“Somebody scratched her eyes out,” said Buchanan.
But, in true Eureka Springs fashion, Buchanan decided that the scratched-out eyes had
become part of the artwork. The painting had moved someone to act, she said. It’s still on
display at The Artery.
